In a nutshell

This internship at Toyota Motor Europe focuses on developing and automating Powertrain Hardware-in-the-Loop (HiL) testing for BEV projects. You will support the setup and improvement of a HiL laboratory, working on bi-directional charging (V2G) systems and micromobility BEV applications. By building and debugging Simulink models, enhancing test automation, and analysing results, you will contribute to advanced powertrain validation methodologies while gaining hands-on experience with EV systems, charging protocols, and real-time simulation technologies.

Your team and your responsibilities

Team/division description

As part of TME R&D organization, the Powertrain Division is responsible for local development of powertrains for vehicles built in one of the TME production plants, and for planning and research of new European technologies. The Powertrain Advanced, Planning &System (PT APS) team research about future technologies that will be applied on the automotive market in a long term while applying and developing novel methodologies in the current projects (MDB, AI, SIL, HIL, MBSE…).

Your project

  • As part of the methodology development team, you will gain knowledge on Hardware-in-the-Loop (HiL) including BEV powertrain (sub) systems simulation. You will actively contribute to the development and process automation of a Powertrain HIL testing laboratory; while learning about different BEV commodities and systems (wall box, on-board charger, ECUs, Inverters…)
  • Some of the current powertrain projects are related to bi-directional charging (Vehicle to Grid: V2G) and the functional evaluation of a micromobility BEV project.

Practical expectations:

  1. Get up to speed with AC-V2G system testing requirements & test environment
    1. Understand the V2G communication protocols and HIL model’s real-time behaviour.
    2. Get hands-on experience on our HIL test bench and enhance the capabilities of the laboratory Graphical User Interface (GUI).
    3. Automating the test campaign and testing process improvement (Kaizen).
    4. Contribute on the results analysis and data pipeline automation.

  2. Develop and improve a HIL application for a micro mobility BEV powertrain.
    1. Understand the powertrain architecture and PT commodities specifications (datasheets, technical drawings. reports).
    2. Creation/manipulation/debugging of Simulink models, and deployment and compilation in a real-time simulator.
    3. Support system evaluation on the HILS bench for functional testing, assisting the bench operator team while proposing improvements.

Your Profile

    • You are fluent in English, able to summarize and explain complex technical Information in a clear and visual way. Any other EU language would be a plus
    • Master in Electric/ (Power) Electronics/ Mechatronics engineering with a strong affinity to the Automotive and Electricity markets.
    • Knowledge about BEV powertrains and EV charging protocols will be an asset.
    • Experience with rapid prototyping environments (i.e. Arduino, ESP32…) and electrical communication protocols (Analog/Digital signals, CAN, LAN, EMC…)
    • You enjoy programming and process automation (C, Python, MATLAB/ Simulink, VBA…)
    • You are a hands-on person in the laboratory, with a problem-solving mindset and a natural debugger (FMEA).
    • Most importantly you are a motivated and proactive team player; ready to actively collaborate in our young and dynamic team as well as working autonomously.
