In a nutshell

Help develop sustainable, quiet cabin solutions for hybrid and electric vehicles. You'll work on acoustic testing and design, focusing on reducing noise and vibration while minimizing weight.

Company Information

TOYOTA is one of the world’s largest automobile manufacturers and a leading global corporation. Founded in 1937. Toyota now sells vehicles in 170 countries and employs over 350.000 people. Based in Brussels, Belgium, and staffed by 2.700 people and more than 60 nationalities, Toyota Motor Europe (TME) handles the wholesale marketing of Toyota and Lexus vehicles, parts & accessories, and manages Toyota’s European R&D, manufacturing, and engineering operations.

We are excited to be transforming into a mobility company focusing on bringing even more happiness to our customers through various mobility solutions.

Your team and your responsibilities

TME R&D centre is responsible for planning, development and production support of vehicles aimed at - and locally produced for - the European market.

The “NV & Driveability” team is part of the Vehicle Performance Engineering division (VPE) division and is responsible for the vehicle NVH (Noise, Vibration and harshness) according to EU customer expectations. We aim at the development of attractive and “fun to drive“ cars matching European market requirements and customer expectations. Using state-of-the art experimental and numerical methods, we develop strategies to achieve the targets, and validate them on virtual and physical prototypes.

Your project

As the market for hybrid and electric vehicles grows, so do customer expectations for a quieter interior. To meet these expectations, various acoustic components are integrated into the vehicle body. It is crucial to minimize the weight of these components to preserve driving range and to use sustainable materials to support our environmental goals.

In this internship, you will explore cutting-edge technologies and methodologies related to acoustic materials to help develop a more sustainable and efficient acoustic package for our vehicles. Specifically, you will:

  • Develop measurement procedures and key performance indicators (KPIs) to assess the level of isolation and the sense of enclosure within the car cabin, effectively shielding occupants from external noise.

  • Investigate the latest technologies to achieve this using both active and passive methods.

  • Collaborate closely with our partners to study new technologies, focusing on acoustic performance, weight, and sustainability.

  • Contribute to the development of virtual models to evaluate the impact of proposed technologies on vehicle acoustic performance.

  • Perform acoustic testing in our anechoic chamber and on our test track to measure the noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) performance of proposed technologies using prototype samples.

  • Assist in developing future acoustic package strategies for Toyota’s Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs), with a strong emphasis on weight and sustainability.

Your Profile

You are pursuing a master's degree in mechanical or acoustical engineering, with a strong interest in cars and sound/acoustics. You have a background in structural dynamics and acoustics, and knowledge of noise and vibration testing and simulation is a significant plus. You have some affinity for mathematical and physical modeling, as well as scientific scripting in Python. You possess good English skills and are eager to work in a multicultural environment.

It is mandatory that applicants are students for the entire period of the internship.

We can only accept students with an EEA or Swiss citizenship (not requiring a work permit or visa to be eligible to perform an internship in Belgium)

We offer

We offer a dynamic multicultural work environment with broad opportunities to learn every day and exciting career pathways that help you explore different disciplines or areas of expertise.

Your benefits

  • Flexible working hours and hybrid working (homeworking, 10 days from abroad);
  • Company restaurant – Warm dishes, salads and desserts daily, including Japanese and traditional Belgian specialties, as well as a vegan/vegetarian option;
  • Sport facilities – Tennis, squash, volleyball, football and softball pitches are available at various Toyota sites;
  • Team building activities and other personnel related events;
  • Programs to support your physical and social well-being.
